In 2026, Schallaburg is dedicated to the 1980s – a decade defined by contrasts, upheaval and new possibilities. Were the 80s a time of stagnation or of new beginnings?
Neon colours, pop culture and expanding freedoms shaped everyday life just as much as political tension, crises and uncertainty. The fall of the Berlin Wall marked a decisive turning point – for Europe and for many people on a deeply personal level.
The exhibition “80s – Breakaway Decade” presents the 1980s not as a closed chapter of history, but as a multifaceted experience. It brings together major historical events and personal memories, politics and pop culture, fear and optimism. As curator Martina puts it:
The 1980s were extremely tense – and at the same time a highly activist decade.
Pop culture, identity and new freedoms
Musik, Mode, Film und Design spiegeln ein Lebensgefühl, das laut, bunt und experimentierfreudig war. Menschen begannen, Regeln infrage zu stellen, neue Lebensentwürfe auszuprobieren und Grenzen zu verschieben – gesellschaftlich, politisch und kulturell. Konsum wurde Ausdruck von Haltung, Popkultur zum Sprachrohr einer Generation.
Ein zentraler Bestandteil der Ausstellung sind Originalobjekte und persönliche Erinnerungsstücke. Viele davon stammen aus einem großen Sammelaufruf und erzählen kleine, individuelle Geschichten, die sich mit den großen Linien der Zeitgeschichte verbinden.
