Take a train to Melk station and continue to Schallaburg Castle on the bus line 721.
Alternatively, take a train to Loosdorf station and continue to Anzendorf on the regional bus line 686, then walk uphill to Schallaburg Castle (approx. 10 min. walking distance).

From the motorway A1, exit Melk or Loosdorf, then follow the signs to Schallaburg.
There are plenty of parking spaces for cars and buses.

There are marked footpaths from Melk station (2,5 hours) and from Loosdorf station (1 hour) to Schallaburg.
For cyclists, Schallaburg Castle is a mere 15 minutes from the Danube Cycle Path. There is a bicycle rack at the reception centre.
Although Schallaburg is a historical site, the exhibition space, castle garden, and restaurant are completely barrier-free. There is also a barrier-free WC for disabled persons.
Parking / shuttle
Designated disabled parking can be reached via car park 2.
Visitors with reduced mobility are welcome to be transported by car to the ticket office and collected from there; please note that the car cannot remain parked at the ticket office for the duration.
Alternatively, we offer a shuttle service for visitors with walking difficulties that runs from the car park to the ticket office. To request the shuttle service, call +43 (0)2754 / 6317-0.
Lifts
Schallaburg offers barrier-free access to all floors. Lift dimensions: 90 cm wide, 140 cm deep.
Wheelchairs available
Two wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge (need to deposit an official ID like a passport, identity card, driver’s license) at the reception centre.

The following questions and answers are based on regulations for visiting exhibition rooms at Schallaburg Castle. All Schallaburg staff and visitors are subject to the same policy. Visitors are to note these rules and observe them. Intoxicated individuals may be refused entry.
What are the opening hours of the exhibition? Until what time can I purchase an admission ticket?
Current opening hours are posted in the entrance area: Monday to Friday: 9 am–5 pm; on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays: 9 am–6 pm. Last admission is at 4 pm from Monday to Friday, and at 5 pm on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays.
Can I take photos?
We do not allow visitors to bring or use cameras or sound recording devices in the exhibition rooms. Touching and photographing exhibition objects is prohibited due to prior legal agreements (e.g. lender provisions). You are welcome to take photographs in any area that is not currently being used as an exhibition space.
Are dogs allowed in the exhibition?
Dogs and other pets are not allowed on the entire Schallaburg premises. Dog bowls for water are available at the reception centre.
Are backpacks and luggage allowed in the exhibition?
Visitors are not allowed to bring umbrellas, canes (or similar), travel bags or backpacks into the exhibition rooms. Please leave your luggage at the cloakroom. Handbags or small backpacks that can be carried over one shoulder like a handbag may be taken into the exhibition rooms.
Can I take my pram into the exhibition?
Prams can be taken into the exhibition; Schallaburg’s barrier-free design makes it easy to navigate prams through various levels in the exhibition area.
Food and drink
Consumption of food, drinks, and ice cream is not permitted in the exhibition rooms.
Smoking
Smoking, e-cigarettes and open flames are prohibited in all indoor spaces at Schallaburg Castle. Please note the fire safety regulations, which apply to all staff and visitors.

The shop and its range of products are always tied to the current exhibition at Schallaburg. Be it the 1970s or Vikings, Byzantium or Islam: items found there are perfectly matched to the show on view and its particular theme. Its shelves include books such as the exhibition catalogues and further publications on the topic, as well as gifts and souvenirs for children and youngsters. Visitors will find postcards, magnets and bookmarks, jewellery, textiles, and culinary gifts, along with a range of articles with a specific relationship to Schallaburg Castle and the region. The museum shop is open every day during exhibition opening hours. We look forward to seeing you there!

Walking & hiking around Schallaburg Castle
Schallaburg Castle is the starting point for numerous walks and hikes. Three circular hiking trails will take you around the immediate area. The routes range from a leisurely stroll around Schallaburg Castle taking about 30 minutes to a 1.5-hour tour. The routes and maps of the three circular hiking trails.
Trips in the region
There are several other excursion destinations in Lower Austria in the immediate vicinity of Schallaburg Castle: a fire brigade museum, a wool workshop, a paper mill, a brandy distillery, a hemp farm, an artisanal cheese dairy, a llama hiking area, and a game reserve.

Food & drink
Of course, we particularly recommend our own Schallaburg restaurant located in the arcade courtyard, but there are also numerous other excellent restaurants near Schallaburg Castle. Lower Austria’s dining culture ranges from rustic village inns to gourmet restaurants. What unites them all is a love of the region, seasonal dishes, close cooperation with local farmers, and genuine hospitality.
