Monumental preservation in Schallaburg Renaissance Castle

(c) Peter FritzThe gentle maintenance and refurbishment of this cultural jewel is a constant challenge and assignment. The aim is a lasting refurbishment using traditional handicraft techniques and proven materials, such as lime and oil paints, in harmony with monument protection.
The requirements placed on the management and the implementing companies vary widely due to the historic development of the castle: the spectrum ranges from the oldest parts, such as the residential castle (11th century), to the two courtyards with tower and terracotta arcades (16th century) to the conversions of recent years.

(c) Peter FritzAt the same time, a castle originally built as a place of residence and representation is used today as a highly frequented exhibition centre with all the associated requirements. Each intervention in the structure, including each refurbishment, always takes place in the interplay between monument protection, safety issues and official requirements, technical feasibility, practical issues and visitor needs.
