Schallaburg Castle

As the most beautiful Renaissance castle north of the Alps, the Schallaburg dominates in the heart of the Mostviertel. In its unique combination of well preserved residential castle from the Middle Ages and artistic seat of power with its unique terracotta arcades, the Schallaburg is one of the most important cultural jewels of Lower Austria.

Not only the first-class, year-round exhibitions make history and experience here. To enter the Schallaburg is to dive into the fascinating and turbulent history of the Renaissance castle. Much of the castle’s history has already been researched. At the same time, many more secrets wait to be unearthed by visitors.

Phases of Construction

The publication “Schallaburg: History – Archaeology – Building Research” focuses on building research in addition to the history of the castle’s ownership and documentation of the archaeological excavations.

Monumental preservation

The maintenance and refurbishing of the cultural jewel is a constant challenge. The aim is a lasting refurbishment using traditional handicraft techniques and proven materials, such as lime and oil paints, in harmony with the monument protection.
